Government Attorney Jobs A government attorney can work at the various levels of government and can work for state attorneys general, public defenders, district attorneys, and the courts. Attorneys working at the federal level, investigate cases for the U.S. Department of Justice and other agencies. One of the important duties of government attorneys is to assist in developing programs, drafting and interpreting laws and legislation, establishing enforcement procedures, and arguing civil and criminal cases on behalf of the government. Other responsibilities of an attorney can include: Writing clearly about complex issues; defending or prosecuting clients in court; keeping up with changes in the law; and possibly writing laws if working at the federal level. To become successful in this field, excellent communication, reasoning, and analytical skills, as well as a willingness to put in long hours becomes essential. He/she is responsible for explaining the procedures and requirements associated with Government law to its clients and thus help them determine the best relevant course of action.
