Environmental Attorney Jobs An environmental attorney is a professional legally qualified to work for clients across the spectrum of industries, including, generators, transmission companies, owners and operators, public and private utilities, oil exploration and refining companies, international contractors, banks and governments. The type of cases involved, depends upon the clients of an attorney. An attorney representing state agency, may defend the actions taken by Government in enforcing hazardous waste management environmental regulations whereas, a lawyer representing a nonprofit interest group may work against an entity harming the environment.
Environmental attorneys have a law degree with Bar registration along with some coursework or experience in environmental issues. One can become an attorney after attending a law school for 3-4 years, if taking full class loads. At the end of the studies, a Juris Doctor (JD) degree or LLB (in Europe) is earned. Degree holders then take a written Bar exam for the state(s) or regions in which they plan to practice. Various environmental law courses are also available through which the lawyers gain additional specialty. Attorneys after working in sizable law firms can expect to work with contractors or procurers or join the legal departments of major international energy and infrastructure companies. Highly qualified engineers, architects and surveyors also have the option of entering into this field. Ability to research and interpret laws, regulations, and judicial rulings is a must for the position
