Patent Paralegal Jobs Patent refers to exclusive rights granted to an inventor for a fixed period of time. A qualified patent paralegal (also called patent specialist) works with a Patent Agent or Patent Attorney helping to file the legal documents required to secure a patent. Duties include: researching on patents; helping to draft patent applications; performing research for litigation proceedings; and handling the administration work involved with patenting inventions. Responsibilities also include: the filing of U.S., international, and foreign patent applications and related correspondence, from filing to issue; maintaining knowledge of latest patent rules; and monitoring and updating attorney dockets on a daily basis. A patent paralegal also assists with filing divisional and continuation applications; assists in due diligence and searching; creates and maintains claim sets, figure sets, status reports, visual packages, and portfolio summaries; prepares patent file history for review in proceedings, including indexing and table of contents; organizes exhibits and coordinates exhibit assembly; reviews applications for completeness and technical accuracy; transmits provisional patent applications; and understands patent claims structure. An Associates degree in paralegal studies or a Bachelors degree with a certificate in paralegal studies is required for paralegal jobs. Paralegals specializing in patent law usually start earning about $35,000 and with experience earn about $70,000 a year.
