Contract Paralegal Jobs Contract Paralegals (also known as Freelance Paralegals) are professionals hired on temporary or task-based basis to work on legal cases. The work is usually of a temporary nature, often with no guaranteed employment term. Educational qualifications of a contract paralegal are just the same as traditionally-employed paralegals. The duties of a Contract Paralegal are no different from those of a traditional paralegal. They work on an as-needed basis and their work is supervised by the attorneys. These paralegals help to make efficient and more cost effective the delivery of legal services to clients. A contract paralegal may be retained by an attorney, law firm, corporation or other entity for the purpose of performing specifically delegated substantive legal work. Certain reasons why the employers think of hiring paralegals on contract basis can include the following: less training costs; no workspace issues; no supplies or equipment to provide; hourly fee; no federal income taxes, social security taxes, unemployment taxes, workers’ compensation taxes; vacation or sick time to pay; and commitments to retain. Contract paralegals receive their fees but they are deprived of the employment benefits. They are more successful in large cities. They may set their own hours but they are responsible for arranging their own health insurance, business insurance, equipment, and secretarial and clerical support. Their success depends on their ability to generate fees.
