Immigration Paralegal Jobs Immigration Paralegals help clients in obtaining their work permits and visas and basically help them with their citizenship process. They assist immigration attorneys to maintain a tickler system for the timely filing of extensions, petitions, and applications; draft applications and petitions for filing with the INS and the DOL; coordinate filing of applications and petitions; draft letters and affidavits supporting the applications and petitions; and obtain and organize documents supporting the applications and petitions. Their duties also include research availability of foreign documents like birth, military, prison and police records and assists clients in obtaining them. Coordinate the certification of foreign documents. They also coordinate the translation of foreign documents, coordinate equivalency evaluations of the foreign degrees. Performing research about the immigrant and nonimmigrant visa alternatives, preparing client for INS interviews, and obtaining monthly visa numbers from the State Department also form important part of their duties. Immigration paralegals function as liaison between the INS, the DOL, and attorneys. An immigration paralegal should have an Associate degree in paralegal studies, graduation from an ABA approved program of study for legal assistants, or a Bachelor’s degree with a certificate in paralegal studies. Bilingual language skills are considered to be an advantage. Immigration law is very intricate and detailed and it sees a rapid change. The paralegals working in this area need to be updated to be successful. The pay starts at about U.S. $40,000.
