They are also prohibited from settling legal fees with the clients. They get better training and supervision compared to new associates. Legal Assistants have the option of working in all types of organizations, however, law firms, corporate legal departments, and various government offices give them preferences. Their duties usually vary according to the type of practice, they are working in. Their main duty is to assist attorneys with their work including: Preparing for closings, hearings, trials, and corporate meetings; investigating the facts of cases; identifying appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other materials, relevant to assigned cases; analyzing and organizing the information. In case of attorneys filing lawsuits, assistants may help prepare the legal arguments, draft pleadings and motions to be filed with the court, obtain affidavits, and assist attorneys during trials. Assist attorneys working in many different areas of the law, including litigation, personal injury, corporate law, criminal law, employee benefits, intellectual property, labor law, bankruptcy, immigration, family law, and real estate. Detailed understanding of legal terminology and excellent research and investigative skills are prerequisites for the position. Familiarity with the operation and applications of computers in legal research and litigation support also is important.
