General Counsel Jobs Chief senior lawyer of an organization is called a General Counsel. Usually this is a full-time position although some corporations contract this position out to a lawyer with a private firm. General Counsels generally head a team of in-house staff lawyers. They have employment opportunities usually in a corporation or government department. Work on interim, part-time, project, supplemental or full-time basis. Provide advice on a varied range of legal issues, including contracts, governance and compliance, business development, mergers and acquisitions, employment, technology, landlord/tenant and litigation management. General Counsels possess an LL.B. or a J.D. degree and are active members of the bar, duly licensed and authorized to practice law as an attorney under the laws of a state, a territory, or the District of Columbia. Significant depth of senior experience in the legal field is a necessity here. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to produce polished written product, management ability, high level analytical thinking, and the ability to work effectively in a balanced manner are all considered to be essential for the candidate to be successful. Outstanding legal skills are mandatory. Demonstrated skills in interpreting and applying laws, regulations, case law, statutes, and policies to provide expert advice to agency leaders concerning legal obligations and flexibilities are needed. General Counsels act as the conscience of a company and make sure that the management is well informed of legal, regulatory and ethical standards in order to make responsible decisions.
