Legal services industry shed 7,000 jobs last year

The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics has released its anxiously awaited job report – and it shows just how bad the economy is hurting the legal services industry.

According to the report, the legal services industry lost some 7,000 jobs between December 2007 and December 2008.

The figures reflect layoffs implemented by firms nationwide as well as the dissolutions of several large firms.

Included in the numbers are not just attorneys on payroll, but also paralegals, public relations specialists, secretaries, and other positions.
