Michigan law school offers counseling to its students, while California county court offers unpaid six months positions.
July 13, 2010
Pasadena, CA — In a sign of how bad the legal job market is for new lawyers, the University of Michigan Law School has told its third year law students that they can take advantage of the school's counseling center to relieve the stress caused by the relatively fewer campus interviews this fall.

At the other end of the country, the Superior Court of San Mateo County in California has placed an advertisement for volunteer lawyers to work as legal research attorneys with a minimum six month commitment. The Court is claiming that it has received a very good response and most of the candidates are young lawyers who just could not land a job in this economy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the legal sector has lost 3,900 jobs in June. In the last twelve months, it has lost around 22,000 jobs.

This news has not stopped an increase in law school applications. Law schools recorded a 3 percent increase in the number of applicants nationwide for this year according to the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC).

For law students graduating this fall without a job offer, LawCrossing CEO, A. Harrison Barnes says there are jobs available. ''New graduates and even lawyers with not a lot of experience are working as paralegals. Plus, there are jobs in small firms. So the situation isn't as bad as it's made out to be.'' Barnes's company has been able to track down almost 11,000 legal jobs in the last seven days.
