Law graduates of class of 2010 face a difficult job market
June 29, 2010
Pasadena, CA — The National Association for Law Placement has reported that the class of 2010 is likely to have lower raw employment numbers than the class before it, although official statistics will not be released till May 2011. It has also said that the prospects for the class of 2011 are not good.

Legal consulting firm Altman Weil is confirming the bleak scenario for lawyers, both new and experienced ones. It has released a reported after doing a survey of 787 law firms that indicates that it will become harder for younger lawyers to climb up the law firm ladder. 38% of large law firms plan on reducing or discontinuing hiring first years in 2010. 54% reduced their summer programs in 2010. 32% of junior associates expect reduced associate salaries as a lasting development. Even the partnership positions are decreasing, with 23% fewer offers being made by law firms to their senior associates.

The blogosphere is already extensively reporting and commenting on the fact that the University of Michigan Law School has posted a job offer from an LPO (Legal Process Outsourcing) on its site, making several law students rethink their law school investments.

But LawCrossing CEO, A. Harrison Barnes says that those fears are exaggerated. ''There are jobs available for new graduates as well as junior associates. We even have partnership positions available on our site. In fact, we have been able to track down over 8,000 legal jobs in the last seven days alone. You just need to know where the jobs are and have realistic expectations regarding your pay.''
