In the Job Market Bloodbath, LawCrossing Adds 25,000 New Jobs in Last Week
January 29, 2009
Pasadena, CA — Amidst the rapidly growing line of firms announcing layoffs, LawCrossing added 25,000 new legal jobs to its site in a single week. This was a 30% increase in the total newly added jobs, which increased from 17,000 in third week of January to 25,000 in the fourth week. The total job count today stands at about 135,000 unfilled legal jobs.

''More and more top-notch law firms are resorting to massive law firm layoffs. LawCrossing is researching more jobs that cater to the needs of growing number of out-of-work legal professionals,'' says Harrison Barnes, CEO and founder of LawCrossing.

Of the latest, San Francisco-based Morrison & Foerster announced that it is laying off more than 200 or 5% of its staff members, which include 53 attorneys and 148 staff members. The firm cites the ''extraordinary economic downturn'' as the reason behind this painful move. In a firm memo, Morrison & Foerster says, ''These decisions are exceedingly painful, but necessary to assure that we address the current economic challenge from a position of financial conservatism and strength.''

Earlier this week, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati gave pink slips to 45 associates and 68 staff employees. The Silicon Valley-based firm also decided to freeze its associate salaries as well. The firm said that all of the layoffs were ''economic'' decisions and not based on job performance.

Last week, another Silicon Valley-based firm, Cooley Godward Kronish, announced that it is laying off 52 attorneys and 62 staff members. The firm reiterated that the move was due to the downsizing economy. Additionally, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and Clifford Chance both announced layoffs in recent weeks.

''These layoffs have affected both associates as well as legal staff. And, it's not easy to find a job today. But if looked at the right places, one can land good positions even in these tough times,'' adds Barnes.

LawCrossing is the pioneer in finding every legal job, and is the largest legal job board in the world. The site provides resources for law students, attorneys, and legal staffs alike, with active jobs totaling around 135,000 legal positions as of this week. ''We are strenuously searching for each and every resource to locate every legal job. The job count itself speaks volumes about our dedicated research,'' adds Barnes.
