September 15, 2006
LawCrossing, the world's largest legal career placement website, has released its monthly statistical report on changes in the legal job market over the past 30 days.

Last month's data show strong patterns of growth in almost every category pertaining to legal staff positions. The report reflects fluctuating levels of demand for attorneys and legal staffing across the legal strata and various regions throughout the U.S. for the period between August 16 and September 14, 2006.

"LawCrossing monitors the hiring needs of virtually every legal employer in the world," said Harrison Barnes, CEO of LawCrossing. "In doing so, we're able to spot and report hiring trends that affect our clients."

Positive job growth has been registered in most geographic regions across the country. The West registered the strongest growth figures overall, with a 12% increase in the government sector. Law firm and in-house figures were up by slightly over 1%.

The Northeast registered a significant, 7.5% gain in government hiring. Law firm and in-house hiring showed only slight increases of less than 1% each.

The South showed a near 7% increase in jobs in the in-house market sector, and the number of law firm jobs increased by nearly one full percentage point. The only dip was in governmental employment, which declined by 6%.

The Southwest experienced a 3% growth in law firm hires and a 2% growth in government positions. Conversely, the in-house job market dropped slightly, by one percentage point.

Only the Mid-Atlantic region showed a slight slippage in overall employment figures. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington, DC, and Maryland indicated a combined total job loss of 36 in law firm employment, which translates to a drop of nearly 2%. In addition, the total of government jobs decreased by 5%.

In terms of specific areas of legal practice, librarian positions showed the biggest jump, registering a 70% increase nationwide, compared to last month's figures. IT positions came in second, with a 55% bump. Marketing and human resources positions each showed increases of 45%. Accounting and finance jobs increased by 32%.

Legal technical and administrative positions showed the smallest gains. Legal secretarial positions only increased by roughly 5%. Jobs available for technical specialists saw an increase of nearly 7%. Paralegal employment showed no statistically significant increase, and the number of legal administrator positions increased by only 2.5%.
