An Overview

Philadelphia, the birthplace of the U.S. Constitution, has inspired millions by the decisions made here.

University of Pennsylvania began offering a full-time program in law in 1850, under the leadership of George Sharswood, an innovator in legal education. Since that time, Penn Law School has been at the forefront of legal education in U.S.A.

Penn Law's LL.M. and graduate programs are recognized as among the best in the United States and attract top students from around the world.

Degrees Offered
  • Wharton Business and Law Certificate

Admission Information

Requirements Details
Eligibility Student must attend full-time for two academic semesters, taking no more than 15 credits per semester and no less than 9 credits per semester, and complete the requirements of either the Course Track or the Thesis Track to receive the LL.M. degree,
Transcripts Student must submit transcripts from any and all post-secondary degree programs, whether or not they have completed the program. These include transcripts from exchange programs.

If there is an issue concerning their transcripts that they would like to address regarding their academic record, they may do so in an addendum to their personal statement.

While the Law School encourages applicants to submit their transcripts through LSAC, they do not need to use LSAC's Transcript Authentication Service. However, if they do not use the Authentication Service, they must submit an English language translation of their transcript when they submit their documents to LSAC.

A transcript from each degree granting post-secondary school attended has to be submitted.
Letters of Recommendation A completed graduate application to Penn Law must include two letters of recommendation, ideally from law professors or others who have personal experience instructing and evaluating the candidate.

An applicant may, alternatively, submit letters from academic instructors outside of the field of law, from employers, or from others with a personal knowledge of the candidate's intellectual and other strengths.

The International Programs Committee strongly advises that all letters be submitted in conjunction with either the Professional or Academic Recommender Form, available on LSAC's site, but it will review letters submitted without the form attached.
Personal Statement Applicant's personal statement should be less than two typed pages and should address their reasons for pursuing a graduate degree at Penn Law. Applicant's essay may describe how Penn Law would complement earlier studies or prepare them for future professional work; their interest in a particular legal field and its application to existing issues in their country or the world; or more broadly how their study here would serve other goals or interests.
Proof of Competency in English Though minimum score is not required, a TOEFL score of 100 (IBT) or 600 (WBT); or a 7 on the IELTS is expected. Most successful applicants matched or surpassed these scores; however a lower score does not automatically preclude an applicant from consideration. Applicants with lower scores are encouraged to submit a supplementary explanation of English language ability with their application materials as well as letter(s) of recommendation regarding their English language abilities.
Application Fee $75
Law School Admission Test Scores from the LSAT or GRE exam are not needed.
Curriculum Vitae Applicant's resume should highlight their relevant educational and professional background, skills (e.g. language facility), and interests. Although there is no limit, one or two pages is usually sufficient.
