Details of Courses Offered

The UH Law Center's LL.M. program in Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Law trains lawyers to handle the complex legal and policy issues that surround three areas: energy production, transportation, and use; pollution prevention and biodiversity protection; and natural resources exploitation and conservation. Students can focus on one of the three areas or pursue broader studies of the interrelationship between energy development and policies to protect the environment.

Established in 1978, the Health Law & Policy Institute has advanced the understanding of health law issues and provided guidance for significant policy decisions affecting every element of health care. The Institute sponsors curriculum, teaching, research, publications, and conference activities related to the health law and policy activities. The Institute is known for its associations with academic and health institutions locally, across the United States, and around the world. An advisory board of leading academicians, practitioners, elected officials, community leaders, and health care executives aid in these collaborations.

LL.M. students benefit from the Institute's active involvement in promoting research and scholarship in intellectual property and information law. LL.M. students receive opportunities to study both traditional and emerging areas of intellectual property law (patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret) and information law (internet, software, electronic commerce, and databases). As a leading center for the exchange of ideas in these fields, the program fosters international co-operation among scholars and practitioners.

The growth of the global marketplace and its interdependence among nations places a premium on lawyers who understand the international implications of various public, private, and commercial activities. Houston holds a commanding international presence - and the Law Center's LL.M. program in International Law capitalizes on the city's substantial global connections. The program allows concentration in public or private aspects of international law, and it provides an opportunity for lawyers to structure their LL.M. curriculum to meet individual interests and needs. LL.M. candidates may choose to focus their studies in a particular area of international law, or they can select from a wide variety of courses to achieve a broad understanding of public and private aspects of international law.

The tax law program at the Law Center boasts a level of sophistication that has earned it national prominence and stature in the Southwest United States. In its 2014 rankings of law schools and specialty programs, U.S. News & World Report ranks UHLC's tax law program 18th among the nation's 194 ABA accredited law schools. According to Professor Paul Caron's TaxProf Blog, this ranking places the UHLC tax program 10th among all U.S. law schools offering LL.M. degrees in taxation.

Students in the Foreign Scholars LL.M. Program work closely with their faculty advisor to design a general course of study that touches on multiple subject areas or build a curriculum around the student's specific interests. Students admitted to the Foreign Scholars Program also have the option of earning a certificate of specialization in Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Law; IPIL; Health Law; International Law; or Tax.

The Foreign Scholars LL.M. program is a general course of study and students select from almost all courses offered at the Law Center.

Financial Aid

The UHLC is unique in that it houses a financial aid advisor within the Law Center. The advisor services only law students and serves as an extension of the main financial aid department. Law students should correspond with the advisor so that all documents go through the Law Center as opposed to the main financial aid office. This will assist with a more timely and accurate awarding of financial aid. The main campus financial aid office located in room 120 of the Welcome Center will assist students in the absence of the Law Center advisor.

Cost of Attendance

Tuition and fees $29,319
