An Overview


The University Of Denver Sturm College Of Law is among the top 100 law schools with nationally ranked programs in environmental and natural resources law, legal writing, clinical training, international law and tax law. Upon graduation, the students are equipped with the skills necessary to provide immediate and valuable contributions to the legal community. Not only are they comfortable drafting a brief or presenting an oral argument, they are also dedicated to upholding the highest ethical standards of their profession. Each student is required to perform a minimum of fifty hours of supervised public service work as a prerequisite to graduation. Students are able to effectively integrate the theory of law with the practice of law while understanding their obligation to perform pro bono work and contribute to their community as practicing attorneys..

Sturm College of Law offers substantive law courses - some of which cannot be found any where else in the nation - in Spanish and Russian and a number of unique writing courses, including those that teach students how to draft pre-trial motions and to negotiate and draft agreements. If students are seeking a comprehensive and strong J.D. degree, interested in a particular area of emphasis, want to augment any legal knowledge with a dual degree, or earn other graduate law degrees, the University of Denver Sturm College Of Law provides a solid legal education to become a successful professional. LL.M. Degree Requirements A full-time student is expected to earn the degree in one academic year (or over two consecutive semesters); a part-time student can earn the degree in 2 years. Generally, the time limit for completing the program is 3 years from the time of matriculation.

All international students on student entry visas should plan to complete the program as full time students in one academic year, beginning in the fall semester and graduating at the end of the spring semester (exceptions may be permitted with certain visa types; for further questions, the IBT Program Manager can be contacted).

1. All students in the IBT LL.M. must complete a minimum of twenty-four (24)/ maximum of twenty-eight (28) semester credits in the IBT LL.M. curriculum. The twenty-four semester credits of coursework must include:

a. International Business Transactions; and b. At least one of (i) Contracts Drafting, (ii) Corporate Drafting Seminar or (iii) Negotiation and Drafting in an International Business Transactions Context or (iv) another course focused on drafting and negotiation skills approved by the Director of the IBT LL.M.

2. All students who obtained a J.D. or J.D. equivalent outside the United States must also take American Legal System: Research, Writing and Analysis OR Advanced Legal Writing. One of these classes counts towards the required twenty-four semester credits.

Legal, business, and policy-making professionals are facing an array of interrelated environmental, natural resources and energy issues. Many competing interests are involved in balancing environmental protection and natural resources development.

The University of Denver Sturm College of Law provides a world-leading course of graduate study and experience for students seeking greater understanding of these issues, and the associated challenges and opportunities. Along with the Environmental and Natural Resources core classes, this college of Law offers the students innovative course work in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development to better prepare and help them excel in their new careers.

The University of Denver Sturm College of Law Roche LL.M. in International Business Transactions program graduates its inaugural class on May 18th, 2013.

Master of Laws in Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy (LL.M.) are open to applicants who have completed a J.D. or foreign equivalent law degree. The LL.M. program develops the expertise for specialization in a global environmental or natural resources law career.

Financial Aid


Chancellor Scholarship: The Chancellor Scholarship Program awards a limited number of full-tuition scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in public interest law.

Ernst & Young Agee Scholarship Fund: This fund was established in the 1980s by the Denver office of Ernst & Young LLP in memory of Sandra Michelson Agee. A partial-tuition scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the Graduate Tax Program. The award will be made on the basis of character, academic achievement, and financial need. The scholarship is awarded for the spring quarter. Additional funds are available through the Ernst & Young Fund for Excellence in Tax Education, which may be used for a scholarship for a minority student.

Schramm Foundation Scholarship: This fund, established in 1976, awards one partial-tuition scholarship each year to a non-smoking, Colorado resident student who has demonstrated financial need and scholastic ability. The scholarship is awarded for the spring quarter.

Debra Schliem Cameron/Lehman Butterwick Scholarship Fund: This fund was established in 1996 in memory of Debra Schliem Cameron, who graduated from the Program in 1982. One full-tuition scholarship is awarded each year to a female student who has demonstrated financial need and scholastic ability. The scholarship is awarded for the summer or fall quarter.
