Job Title Legal Staff/Criminal Law,Litigation
Job Profile Legal Clerk III
Duties: Under general supervision, performs difficult legal clerical duties related to the preparation, processing and disposition of criminal and/or juvenile court cases; provides lead supervision to assigned staff; and performs related duties as required. The Legal Clerk classification series is utilized primarily in the Criminal Division of the District Attorney's Office to provide clerical support to the attorney staff. Legal Clerk III is the highest level in the series. Incumbents act as lead workers. Legal Clerk III is distinguished from the II level by the lead responsibility and performance of complex duties involving the frequent exercise of independent judgment. The Legal Clerk classification series is distinguished from the Office Assistant series by the complexity of the duties, the breadth of legal knowledge involved, the consequences of error and the coordinative responsibilities with the various courts. It is distinguished from the Department Specialist, Justice System; by the primary responsibility for legal clerical support to attorney staff and the focus on preparation, prosecution and disposition of criminal court cases. Assigns, supervises and reviews work of subordinate staff; assists in clerical staff training; prepares written evaluations of subordinate staff; provides assistance to clerical staff or personally performs the most complex or difficult legal clerical assignments. This classification is used on any of the general Legal Clerk desks performing the following general duties in addition to supervisory duties: prepares pleadings such as complaints, information; types subpoenas; dispatches and checks on service of subpoenas, warrants, declarations, legal briefs and motion, proofs of service, letters for discovery; distributes discovery to defense counsel in a timely manner; prepares complex court orders by obtaining information from attorney notes, court transcripts, letters from mental health personnel; prepares court verdicts; prepares and compiles statistical information for quarterly reports on grant funded desks; maintains records and files; reviews documents for compliance with court regulations, California Penal Code and/or California Civil Code of Procedures; assists professional staff by completing and assembling a variety of data as necessary; answers inquiries and gives out information as authorized to parties involved in legal proceedings; assists defense attorneys as necessary; operates various office equipment including computer equipment, printer, dictaphone/recorder and photocopier. (Essential duties may vary from position to position within classifications. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law.)
Qualification and Experience Minimum qualifications:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: Two years of experience as a Legal Clerk II in Kings County.

Special Requirements: Ability to type at a speed of 40 words per minute; ability to qualify for security clearance through a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting.

Knowledge of: Operation and procedures of the Criminal Division of the District Attorney's Office and the courts; modern legal office methods and procedures; effective supervision, training and evaluation techniques; legal terminology and phraseology; proper English spelling, grammar and punctuation; legal filing practices and indexing.

Ability to: Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; organize and prioritize workload and assignments for subordinates; exercise sound judgment; read, analyze and interpret changes in laws, policies and procedures; effectively operate a various office equipment including computer equipment, printer, Dictaphone/recorder and photocopier; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective work relationships with subordinates, other employees, attorneys and the general public.
