City Attorney The candidate will serve as legal advisor to all offices and departments of the City. Will represent the City in all litigation and legal proceedings either personally or through delegation to assistants and/or outside counsel. Draft, approve, or file written legal objections to every ordinance adopted by the Council. Review for approval of documents, contracts, and legal instruments in which the City has an interest. Appoint Assistant City Attorneys as authorized by the City Council and supervise such Assistant City Attorneys. Hire and oversee outside counsel as needed and as authorized by the City Council.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should be a graduate of an accredited law school. Must have practiced law in Texas for 5+ years immediately preceding appointment. Should be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Must have 3+ years of legal experience in local government. Should also have 3+ years of administrative experience in a supervisory capacity. Must have experience in the areas of litigation, contracts, real estate, land use, environmental regulation, torts, taxation, collections, employment, civil rights, and administrative law. Should have experience in planning, organizing, and managing the activities and operations of a local government legal department, including supervision of departmental employees and contractors. Must have experience in dealing simultaneously with public officials, employees, and the general public. Should have experience in selecting and overseeing the work of outside attorneys. Valid Class C Texas DL is required.

NOTE: The candidate will be employed by and responsible to the City Council for a four-year term of office. May be removed for cause by a majority vote of Council Members qualified and serving.

Testing: Applicants selected for an interview will be asked at least one question in writing at the time of the interview. One hour will be allowed for response and candidates may use all available resources (short of plagiarism or having someone else for the actual writing).

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday as required.
