City Attorney The Waco City Council is seeking applications from experienced, client-focused attorneys who are comfortable and skilled at viewing issues from a city-wide perspective and interested in serving as the Waco City Attorney. KEY DUTIES Key duties of the City Attorney position include: Serving as legal advisor to all offices and departments of the City; representing the City in all litigation and legal proceedings (either personally or through delegation to assistants and/or outside counsel; drafting, approving, or filing written legal objections to every ordinance adopted by the Council; reviewing for approval of documents, contracts, and legal instruments in which the City has an interest; appointing Assistant City Attorneys as authorized by the City Council and supervising such Assistant City Attorneys; and hiring and overseeing outside counsel as needed and as authorized by the City Council.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should be a graduate of an accredited law school (transcripts will be verified). Must have practiced law in Texas for 5+ years immediately preceding appointment. Should be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Must have 3+ years of legal experience in local government.
Additional attributes to be considered in selecting candidates for interview include: Experience in planning, organizing, and managing the activities and operations of a local government legal department, including supervision of departmental employees and contractors; a minimum of three years of administrative experience in a supervisory capacity; experience in dealing simultaneously with public officials, employees, and the general public; experience in the areas of litigation, contracts, real estate, land use, environmental regulation, torts, taxation, collections, employment, civil rights, and administrative law; experience in selecting and overseeing the work of outside attorneys; organizational skills; attention to detail; quality of written instruction; progressively responsible employment experience with honest and realistic description of achievements, and the extent to which minimum qualifications are exceeded.
Drivers License: Valid Class C Texas DL
Testing: Applicants selected for an interview will be asked at least one question in writing at the time of the interview. One hour will be allowed for response and candidates may use all available resources (short of plagiarism or having someone else for the actual writing).
NOTE: The candidate will be employed by and responsible to the City Council for a four-year term of office. May be removed for cause by a majority vote of Council Members qualified and serving. Contract terms to be negotiated before employment begins; salary commensurate with experience.
