Manager Seeking a Manager of Business Development/Litigation who will serve as the main point of contact for the business development efforts of the Firm's attorneys in the assigned practice areas, including Employment, IP/Media, and Product Liability/Mass Tort Litigation, across all offices. Candidate will also: Procure, standardize and maintain all matter information as it pertains to business development for the assigned practice areas; Oversee, coordinate and/or prepare substantive client-facing written materials, including pitches, RFP responses, client presentations and collateral brochures; Maintain accurate, updated, and effective biographies for attorneys for use in pitches, on the website and in other business development contexts; Provide strategic analysis of opportunities with existing and new clients, and help position the assigned practice areas and its attorneys to strengthen and expand existing relationships and win new business; Monitor, analyze and track developments relevant to existing and potential clients; Determine and execute efforts to best position and raise the profile of the assigned practice areas, including preparation of submissions for legal guides, awards, and other accolades and public recognition; Provide strategic recommendations for, and track outcome of, profile-enhancing speaking engagements, client events and charitable and other sponsorship opportunities; Plan and execute business development initiatives for assigned practice areas. Participate in planning and execution of cross-department/practice/office business development initiatives, as required; Provide input and coordinate and cooperate with the Communications/Public Relations Department when the Firm is positioning the assigned practice areas and individual attorneys for public relations purposes; Work collaboratively with the Business Development team, using available resources effectively and appropriately; Supervise direct reports and other administrative staff as needed; Additional related responsibilities as requested and assigned.
Qualification and Experience
Ideal candidate will possess a Bachelors degree or equivalent required, J.D. or related graduated degree highly preferred. Must also have 3+ years of business development experience, preferably derived from employment with a major international law firm, investment bank or related professional services firm, or 3+ years as an associate at a major international law firm working with partners in presenting pitches; A commitment to the highest standards of excellence and professionalism that are the hallmarks of Weil’s legal practice; “Big picture" thinker with a willingness to offer diverging opinions and to “think outside the box"; Significant knowledge of and passion for large-scale Litigation, including the legal terminology used in these practices; Knowledge of legal market, including competitor firms and industry trends. Excellent research, analytical, project management and writing skills; Ability to work with senior partners in business development opportunities; Strong writing, presentation and organizational skills; Demonstrated ability to handle time-sensitive requests from attorneys and to generate quality work product in a fast-paced, challenging environment; Proven creativity, conceptual skills development and resourcefulness, as well as demonstrated experience effecting organizational initiatives and vision; Excellent consultative and consensus-building skills in working with partners and senior attorneys; Organizational and political savvy in working within a large professional services organization; Ability to negotiate individual, group and firm-wide needs and to interface successfully with multiple levels within the Business Development Department, as well as partners, associates, legal support staff and other marketing staff; Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the firm’s entire marketing staff; Familiarity with standard word processing, presentation, spreadsheet and database applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel), as well as with a variety of on-line data/information resources (e.g., Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, etc); Excellent interpersonal skills; a confident, professional manner that will come across easily and effectively with the Firm’s most senior attorneys.
