Overview

Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP was founded in 1919 and quickly built a national reputation for excellence in the financial and corporate areas. During the mid to late 1930's, Cahill earned status as a "Securities Act" firm and during and after the Second World War, under the leadership of John T. Cahill, the legendary former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Cahill grew dramatically. Maintaining its innovative corporate law practice, the firm also came to be counted among the leading litigation firms in the nation. Cahill has thrived for nearly a century by focusing on the most significant opportunities and complex challenges facing the top financial services firms and other multinational corporations. Our premier transactional and litigation groups have developed impressive records of accomplishment in high profile cases and headline-grabbing deals. Cahill lawyers are highly client-driven. The firm is specifically chosen by clients because of our experience, depth of knowledge and facility in managing challenging situations. Cahill is known for innovative trial strategies and financing solutions that draw on the strengths of the entire firm and reflect a wider perspective than that typically afforded by the specialized niches and micro practices that make up a large law firm. A passion for challenging and distinctive work is at the heart of our firm culture and explains why Cahill consistently wins cases and ranks among the most active firms in the financial league tables year after year. Among our ranks are lawyers who joined Cahill following distinguished careers in the Securities and Exchange Commission, United States Department of Justice, Department of the Treasury, Federal Trade Commission and other federal and state agencies. Our lawyers are committed to advancing the goals of not-for-profit organizations through our pro bono program, and we are proud of our unique partnership with The Legal Aid Society, which helps disadvantaged New Yorkers, including children, immigrants and the disabled achieve justice under the law. Each year since 2005, The Legal Aid Society has presented the firm or our lawyers with the Pro Bono Publico Award "in recognition of Cahill's outstanding commitment to the cause of equal justice through pro bono service."

Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP Reviews

- Reviewed on July 01, 2017

The leadership team is doing a great job staying accessible to even the new associates at the firm. It's nice to see an open door policy that actually works.

Pros : This is a great place for those looking to advance their careers. I've found the leadership team to be incredibly accessible and approachable, which is a breath of fresh air. Even new associates are given exposure to large, high-profile cases at a level that I haven't seen in corporate finance firms before.
Cons : This is a very specialized firm, so those looking to be exposed to a wide variety of clients and cases probably won't be too happy here. Compensation for new associates could probably stand some adjustment, as well.

Notable cases

  • Widely regarded for its commercial litigation practice, Cahill, in recent times, has numerous success stories to its fame.
  • The firm has advised the underwriters in the IPOs of HCA Inc and Nielsen Company, both among the largest U.S. private-equity backed IPOs.
  • Cahill also helped NBC win it's over $4 billion bid to become the exclusive broadcaster to the Olympic Games through 2020.
  • On the transactional front, the firm has won many honors and topped many rankings due to its M&A, leveraged loan and capital markets work.
  • Recently, Cahill is representing Time Warner Cable Inc. in a subscriber class action arising out of the temporary suspension of the cable giant's right to distribute the MSG regional sports networks, which carry the Knicks, Rangers, Sabres, and Islanders games among others on the Time Warner Cable systems.
  • As a mark of its successful law practice for large corporations, Cahill corporate governance and investigations team was called by the Audit Committee of Wal-Mart to represent them regarding an investigation in connection with its international operations.
  • Cahill represented Barclays Bank and JPMorgan Chase Bank as administrative agents and Citi and RBC as lead arrangers in connection with a $4 billion bank financing transactions for Kraft Foods Global, Inc., and Kraft Foods, Inc.

Awards and recognitions

In spite of being a relatively small law firm in the US, Cahill has successfully marked its presence by not only drawing attention of its prospective clients but also it has been able to get national and international recognition for its law practice.

Cahill has been consistently ranked no.1 by Bloomberg for representing investment banks in the over $250 billion (2011) US corporate high yield debt markets and also Thomson Reuters conferred the law firm with the no.1 position for representing lenders and arrangers in the over $400 billion (2011) US corporate leveraged syndicated loan markets.

Diversity

The firm believes that the diverse backgrounds of its lawyers and staff foster creativity and innovation that enable the firm to provide a higher level of service to its clients. Cahill was an original signatory of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York's (ABCNY) 1991 "Statement of Diversity Principles", which was revised in 2003.

The firm is committed to a policy of equal opportunity and, in conformity with federal, state and local law, prohibiting discrimination on account of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, citizenship, disability or sexual orientation with respect to any and all terms of employment.

Summer associate program

Cahill has a 10-week summer program, where associates are expected to complete about 10 assignments and attend weekly training sessions. The firm maintains flexible policy for its summer program staffing and allows summers to work in a variety of practice groups or to concentrate in one area.

Summer associates are assigned a Liaison Partner, who assists the summer associate in finding assignments in any and all areas in which the summer associate expresses an interest, including pro bono work. It may be noted that in 2010, 100% of the firm's 15 summer associates received offers.

The firm encourages its summer associates to capitalize on different opportunities to represent, on a one-on-one basis, pro bono clients of The Legal Aid Society of New York, who lack the legal counsel indispensable to secure benefits that profoundly impact their lives.
