Steptoe LLP. follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.
The firm interviews prospective candidates at numerous law schools across the country and also conducts videoconference interviews at a limited number of schools. Interested candidates should apply online with a completed application form, current resume, recent law school transcript and a writing sample. The firm is an equal employment opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any applicant in any manner whatsoever.
As a national and international law firm, Steptoe handles a full spectrum of pro bono matters. Many involve significant legal issues with far-reaching effect, such as race, age, gender, and disability discrimination; human rights; freedom of speech; prisoners' rights; and voting rights. The firm has a long and rich heritage of public service that is a fundamental part of the history, ethic, and operation of the institution. Steptoe takes its professional responsibilities as lawyers seriously, with the aim of serving the underserved people of the society it is privileged to serve. The firm also believes that it is a genuine responsibility of the firm to provide high-quality, result-oriented legal service to those who desperately need them but cannot afford it. Matters in which the firm has provided pro bon services include custody, adoption, domestic violence, housing and homelessness, political asylum, wage and hour claims, HIV/AIDS, education, consumer protection, public benefits, mental health, and tax. Last year the firm put in upwards of 36,000 pro bono hours. While the majority of its lawyers participate in pro bono work each year, and the firm appreciates and acknowledges their efforts, it remains a core objective of the firm's pro bono program to obtain 100% participation.
