I think the leadership team should really consider reducing the workload for associates. The work/life balance here is not the best and easing the pressure even a little would improve the quality of life for many associates.

Pros : The best thing about working here is definitely the support staff. They are professional, knowledgeable, efficient, and great at what they do. This firm runs like a dream, and the support staff are the ones to thank.
Cons : Working here is very demanding. The leadership team has very high expectations for associates and support staff, and they put incredible pressure on associates to deliver results. The end result is a very profitable firm where everyone spends a lot of late nights at the office.

Notable cases

  • The firm was retained by the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) to provide legal counsel. This was in connection with the group's Dodd-Frank documentation project, which includes a comprehensive analysis of the most important rules affecting documentation under the Dodd-Frank Act.
  • Cadwalader partner David Miller testified at a joint hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance and the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means on "Tax Reform and the Tax Treatment of Financial Products.
  • The firm acted as antitrust counsel to Microsoft in its $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype. It was consequently awarded "Merger Control Matter of the Year - Europe" at the Global Competition Review Awards 2012.

Summer associate program

The Summer Associate Program at Cadwalader is for students for 10 to 12 weeks after their second year of law school. Students are put under the supervision of experienced attorneys and have the opportunity to be involved in ongoing projects. The goal of the firm is to expose them to various aspects of law practice. This also includes client meetings, participation in strategy and drafting sessions, and attending negotiations, closings, depositions and court appearances.

Students are provided an in-depth orientation, where they can work in several of the firm's departments that totally depend upon their interests. Students are treated just like a full-fledged Cadwalader associate. Training continues throughout their summer stay with an emphasis on substantive and skills building presentations as well as seminars.

Associates as well as partner mentors work closely with the students throughout the summer and are even asked to pick up a pro bono project as well. The students are also provided with day-to-day appraisals of their work by supervisors and mentors. Furthermore, midsummer involves a formal evaluation and again at the end of the program. Besides assignment of the work, summer associates are provided with assignments from the departments they are interested to work with.

Summer associates also receive diverse as well as challenging assignments and even work alongside partners and more senior associates. They also receive in depth overall training and participate in various presentations as well as workshops.
