Overview

Linklaters LLP is a global law firm headquartered in London, UK and an eminent member of the coveted 'Magic Circle' of UK law firms. Linklaters LLP is the fourth largest global law firm in the world in terms of revenue (£1.2bn in revenue as in April 2011). With 2200+ legal advisers and 2800+ staff across 27 offices in 19 countries, Linklaters is one of the biggest law firms worldwide. As reported on May 1, 2011, the firm boasted of 480 practicing partners and a total staff of more than 5000 lawyers. The law firm is known to undertake the most difficult and most challenging legal assignments across the world. Its clients mainly include leading companies, financial institutions, and sometimes governments who are stuck in complex legal issues. More than 70% of the legal issues that the firm practices are related to multi-country/multi-practice matters. The company has been instrumental in historic cases such as RBS' takeover of ABN.The firm has also resolved international alliance concerns and has concentrated on expanding to Eastern European markets and even Middle East and Asia. Some years back, it even closed down its offices in Bratislava, Budapest, and Prague. In recent years, the firm has opened one of its offices in Abu Dhabi and its announcement of an "integrated global alliance" with an Australian firm Allens suggests that it is on the right track. Founded in 1838 as Dods & Linklater, the firm merged with Paine, Blyth & Huxtable in 1920 establishing its reputation as a fantastic English law firm with small domestic operations with a few overseas jurisdictions. In 1996, the firm decided to expand globally citing demand for multi-jurisdictional legal advice. Since then, Linklaters has been on a merger-and-alliance-making spree. In 1998, the firm formed an with four other European law firms and then merged with three firms in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and Sweden. Over the years, Linklaters merged with firms in the Czech Republic and Poland and opened offices in multiple cities including Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai, Lisbon and Madrid. During this period, Linklaters formed joint ventures with a Singaporean law firm and a Brazilian firm to further interests in the cities. After Japan permitted multi-national partnerships in 2005, Linklaters made the most of the opportunity and was the first one to create Japan's first fully merged law firm practising law related to Japan, UK and US. Not all years brought good news for the firm as Linklaters had to bear credit crunch problem in 2008 and resort to cutting 270 jobs in London including 120 lawyers and 150 of the staff. In one of the biggest cases in 2008, Linklaters was appointed for handling Lehman Brothers insolvency.

The offices which offer summer seats for law students in the US are New York, London and Hong Kong. Most work assignments are then coordinated by workflow coordinators who are mostly senior associates and partners. Summer associates will be given a chance to participate in pro bono projects too.

A wide array of events is held for helping out partners and associates to meet and learn more about each other. The summer program is famous for its three-day London Retreat where associates are flown to London for educational sessions and social events. Presentations, roundtable discussions, commercial tours and a flagship formal dinner event are included in the trip. There are two formal review opportunities within the program too.
