Many of the firm’s prominent attorneys are former chairmen, members of administration, and even former members of the US House of Representatives. Robert Strauss, one of the two founders of the firm is a former a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union. In the initial years after law school, he joined the FBI as a special agent. The firm was founded in association with Richard Gump, who was a college friend and also served with the FBI. The firm’s initial client was the Dallas Transit Company, a private firm being sold to the government. This representation earned the firm a handsome sum of $450,000. This set the firm on the growth path since its early days. In 1971, Akin Gump established an office in Washington, which had a staff of just two attorneys. By the late 1990’s, the firm was employing over 300 lawyers. In 1978, a branch office was established in Austin in 1978 to serve clients belonging to the oil industry. The 80’s saw further expansion of the firm along with an economy that was booming. This added millions of new jobs, which indirectly benefited the firm in its expansion strategy. In 1984, it opened an office in San Antonio, which was followed in 1988 by an office in Houston. In 1989, the firm expanded further, by opening an office in Brussels. In 1991, one of the firm’s founding partners Robert Strauss was appointed ambassador to the Soviet Union. Hence, for a brief period, Robert Strauss had to leave the firm. However, the firm continued to benefit from his government services and opened a branch office in 1994 in Moscow. Strauss rejoined the firm in 1992. In the nineties, the firm’s clients included several leading figures, entities and governments, such as the People’s Republic of China, the Korean Foreign Trade Association, the Chilean Exporter’s association, a few Japanese companies, and even the Government of Columbia. By the end of the decade, the firm was employing more than a hundred lawyers. In 1996, the firm founded an office in Philadelphia. In the following year, Akin Gump opened an office in Los Angeles and London. Akin Gump is also well known as a lobbying law firm, and brought in considerable revenue during 1996 and 1997 from clients such as Mobil as well as Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Akin Gump and other law firms increased their clout in the national capital by donating to political parties. In the late 1990’s, the firm served many high profile companies as well as institutions. These included the University of Texas, Samsung, 3M, AT&T, and Lukoil, which was Russia’s largest oil company at that time. By 1999, Akin Gump had grown to be the nineteenth largest international law firm. However, competition was fierce, as many law firms expanded overseas. Firms expanded by consolidating and merging, while international accounting firms began a trend of employing thousands of lawyers. This posed yet another significant source of competition for Akin Gump as it moved in to the 21st century.
