Assistant Chief Counsel The candidate assists Chief Counsel in all areas as required. Represents the State Accident Fund in complex litigated cases before the Workers' Compensation Commission, Circuit Courts, and Appellate Courts. Provides professional legal advice to the State Accident Fund on matters of a complex and technical nature, including providing opinions on legislative acts and court decisions. Conducts complex legal research within a highly technical and specialized area. Writes Orders, Briefs and memorandums of law. Negotiates settlements of workers' compensation claims involving the State Accident Fund. Acts as legal liaison between the State Accident Fund employees and attorneys on cases assigned to contract attorneys. Performs other legal duties as required. should have Juris Doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and 1 years experience as a practicing Attorney, preferably in Workers' Compensation Law. Special requirements: must be a member of the South Carolina Bar. Considerable knowledge of South Carolina Law is preferred. Ability: Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to interpret and apply laws and judicial decisions. Ability to conduct independent legal research and prepare and defend cases before the Workers' Compensation Commission and all courts of South Carolina. Ability to take depositions, negotiate settlement agreements, etc. Ability to establish good working relationships and rapport with others outside the agency, such as attorneys, physicians, witnesses, insurance companies, institution heads, personnel directors, and employees.
