Senior Tax Manager The candidate will be using discretion and judgment, under the direction of the Tax Director, develops, recommends and implements tax policy. Will provide technical assistance to Fund Treasury employees, as well as members of the Compliance Department, Legal Department, portfolio managers and outside vendors relating to Federal, state, and international income tax matters affecting Fund products managed by firm. Provides assistance with regard to technical tax compliance matters, including income tax and excise tax review and/or preparation. Understands and provides guidance to employees and outside vendors on complex tax issues. Supervises Tax Managers and Tax Supervisors. Performs technical tax research and analysis of domestic and international tax issues with respect to timing and characterization of income, distribution policies, and withholding taxes. Designs, implements and continually improves department procedures to facilitate pro-active identification and resolution of tax issues. Performs technical tax research and analysis with respect to fund transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions or liquidations, reorganizations, corporate actions and other matters affecting the funds or holdings of the funds. Makes recommendations and prepares documentation with respect to these transactions. Works with Treasurer, Assistant Treasurers and other interested personnel (including independent auditors, firm Legal, firm Compliance and firm management) to understand and resolve complex fund tax issues as they arise. Monitors foreign country tax law changes and stays current on matters that may impact the Funds' tax compliance in foreign jurisdictions, including global tax withholding and reclaims. Reviews complex Partnership tax returns, Schedule K-1s, partnership allocations, Employee Benefit Plan Form 5500s, and related work for other alternative products. Proactively evaluates and revises current tax policies and procedures to take into account time and data efficiencies. Reviews financial statements, prospectuses, statements of additional information, proxies and other reports or material containing tax disclosure information. Ensures consistency of tax-related disclosures across all products. Provides assistance in the year-end reporting of income to transfer agents with respect to the source of distributions, including ordinary income, capital gain distributions, return of capital, tax-exempt amount, and percentage of income from government sources, state-by-state breakdown of tax-exempt income, AMT amount, QDI amount, foreign taxes withheld and other classifications. Oversees deadlines for filing tax returns required of the funds, including any returns, forms or reports due to any Federal, state, local, or foreign jurisdiction. Trains and develops Fund Treasury staff and others on tax matters. Provides oversight in the development, implementation and maintenance of a formal tax-training program. Interacts with Fund custodians in connection with the review of domestic and foreign corporate actions to determine the taxable status and any character or timing differences of income recognition for book and tax purposes. Performs other related responsibilities as requested.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education, preferably with a CPA, JD, or Master's Degree specializing in Taxation. Must have 10+ years of work experience, with 6-7 years of experience in a senior tax role. Technical experience with U.S. and international taxation issues through a public accounting firm, investment advisory organization or other similar experience is required. Mutual fund tax experience is required. Strong knowledge of Subchapter M of the Internal Revenue Code and experience as it relates to distribution requirements, tax return preparation and tax planning is required. Knowledge of the Investment Company Act rules and regulations and Regulation S-X is required.
