Senior Tax Advisor - State, Local and Franchise The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of company's corporate state income/franchise tax liability to include preparation and maintenance of tax returns and workpapers, preparation/review of income tax provision, income tax withholding deposits, and other related tasks. Will possess a thorough knowledge of tax laws and regulations related to state income taxation. May be required to research and advise business leaders on potential impacts from new and changing state income tax laws and regulations and provide tax options to reduce tax burdens. May assist in the development of tax strategies within the department and/or the business and define data requirements for business systems related to tax. May assist in state income tax audit support. May assist in all aspects of multistate income and franchise tax compliance, planning, and audit support. Through advanced knowledge of state income taxation, may be responsible for the preparation, review, and analysis of highly complex tax assignments to include but not limited to tax returns, tax accruals, withholding returns, income tax withholding deposits and periodic reconciliations of taxes withheld to general ledger liability accounts and Forms 1099. Ensures tax records, tax returns and analysis are compliant with required tax regulators to include tax laws, regulations, court decisions, regulatory agency rulings/decisions, and GAAP/STAT accounting rules. Proactively and under minimal supervision, may be required to research complex state income tax issues, proposed and new state income tax laws, regulations, and decisions from judicial and regulatory agencies. Applies advanced knowledge to identify and consider tax implications on business models. Consistently advises business leaders on management of tax impacts enabling them to meet business objectives and mitigate negative effects. Acts as a key contributor in leading special tax projects across the enterprise. May be responsible for the definition of data requirements for business systems to ensure accurate and compliant tax filing and information reporting. May be responsible for conducting, researching and resolving internal and external tax audits. Applies advanced knowledge to identify emerging tax risk exposure and actively participates in risk mitigation strategies. Assists in implementation of new risk policies and best practices. Performs complex work assignments and problem resolution. Serves as a mentor to peers and team members. Provides insight and guides management on various tax issues of a complex nature. Performs other tasks as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or similar business concentration. Master's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, or a J.D./LL.M Degree preferred. State Income/Franchise Tax experience that includes compliance, planning, provision, and audit support in a large multi-state environment is desired. 4 years of experience in tax can be substituted in lieu of a degree in addition to the minimum years of experience required. Experience with Adobe Acrobat Professional and/or creation of electronic workpapers are preferred. Should have 6+ years experience in Tax or related work experience. Must have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and functionalities of corporate financial systems. Must be proficient with Thomson Reuters OneSource Income Tax and State Apportionment software products; CorpTax Provision; and Microsoft Office products. Should have thorough tax knowledge and ability to research state tax laws, polices, and procedures with little to no supervision. Must have strong analytical and spreadsheet skills/experience, while possessing a comprehensive understanding of technology's role within the tax function. Public accounting experience is desired. Relevant experience with state income taxation within the banking, investments, real estate, insurance, and/or other financial services industries are preferred.
