Senior House Counsel Supervisory Attorney The candidate assists the Managing Attorney in ensuring the quality of legal services to clients and claims customers; assists the Managing attorney with the supervision, training and technical guidance of the attorneys and office staff when the Managing Attorney is not in the office; monitors the utilization of the office software system and reports on key metrics to ensure that desired objectives are met; may handle a modified case load appropriate for the size of the office; maintains reporting procedures; maintains current knowledge of changes in New York law; timely answers or responses to summonses and complaints and other pleadings; initiate and respond to written discovery; prepare and respond to motions before the court; prepare for and attend all court appearances as necessary; prepare for (including written submissions) and attend arbitrations where appropriate; prepare for, schedule and conduct depositions and examinations under oath as necessary; prepare for and attend trials as necessary; research and analyze legal questions and issues; write confidential legal memoranda; draft confidential opinions; research and prepare post trial motions and appeals

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State Bar; 10+ years of insurance defense litigation experience in a law firm or house counsel office setting focusing on personal lines insurance is required; automobile liability experience is preferred; homeowner's premises experience would be a plus.; must possess experience through all phases of litigation including extensive first chair trial and appellate practice in state and federal courts, in the defense of homeowners/premises liability claims, automobile liability claims and uninsured/underinsured claims on behalf of an insurance carrier; must include all phases of litigation up to and including trials to verdict involving complex, high risk and/or high exposure cases; knowledge and experience conducting discovery, fact and expert witness depositions, motion, trial and appellate practice in state and federal courts in the jurisdictions where the house counsel office practices; knowledge of complex medical issues, particularly orthopedic and neurological; understanding of etiology, causation and treatment of injuries consistent with motor vehicle and premises accidents; strong analytical and critical thinking skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills with attention to detail; must have strong administrative skills and interpersonal management skills; strong leadership, team building and customer relationship skills, including the ability to assimilate complex legal matters and provide concise, practical advice to non-lawyers; requires a high degree of initiative, mature judgment, discretion and the ability to handle sensitive matters on a confidential basis; have proficiency with Westlaw and Microsoft Office software; requires a high degree of initiative, mature judgment, and discretion; ability to resolve conflicts and empathize with clients; negotiation skills are critical for resolving litigation; demonstrates a solid understanding of insurance law; demonstrates the ability to find answers to more complex issues with insurance law and is a source of direction/assistance for staff attorneys; demonstrates a solid understanding of the insurance industry and organizational relationships of the company; demonstrates a solid understanding of the functions of other departments; demonstrates effective leadership skills.
