As AVP, Reinsurance Counsel reporting to the Head of Department for Reinsurance, will be responsible for a team managing complex ceded reinsurance claims. • The Reinsurance Counsel will handle reinsurance cases ranging in complexity from simple, low-exposure cases to complex, high-exposure cases. • Reinsurance Counsel will be expected to take responsibility for driving the resolution of ceded recoverables arising on assigned work matters and demonstrating leadership skills in doing so. • Reinsurance Counsel will be expected to solve problems of a nature and frequency routinely expected of an experienced attorney handling reinsurance cases ranging in complexity. • Decisions made by Reinsurance Counsel will have a direct and indirect impact on the financial strength and success of RiverStone and its insurance carrier affiliates. • Involve several levels of organization and reappraisal of results in a wide organizational context. • Settlements and judgments at levels approved by the Head of Dept., Reinsurance Counsel will have authority to make decisions regarding the day-to-day handling of assigned work matters subject to levels of authority and existing standards, protocols and practices established within the organization. • Work requires overall guidance and collaboration from the head of the reinsurance Dept. • Reinsurance Counsel will be expected to work independently, while exercising good judgment at all times with respect to communicating about the status of assigned work matters and when to seek input, guidance and approvals. • The precise level of supervision will depend on the experience, performance and good judgment demonstrated by the successful candidate. • Will lead the dispute resolution process, maintaining dispute management reports, escalation workflow making provision recommendations, formulating and executing disposition strategy. • Formulating trial and hearing strategies and participating in trials and hearings on assigned work matters. • Recommending, collaborating and managing costs of assigned outside counsel. • Appearing at depositions, mediations, court conferences, hearings, trials and arbitrations throughout the United States on assigned work matters. • Responsible for developing teams understanding of the entire dispute resolution process and methods utilized in yielding strong financial outcomes. • Supports the Head of Dept.in hiring, performance management, training and professional development of the ceded dispute/complex claims team. • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships, both internally and externally. • Ensures dispute provisions accurately flow into the financials and responsible for SOX controls relating to dispute management • Participates in internal and external financial audits as they relate to disputed ceded recoverables • Manages all aspects of the reinsurer audit process, including securing signed confidentiality agreements and documenting and addressing reinsurer inquiries consistent with audit protocols • Assists in the management of the day to day operations of the reinsurance collections unit escalating issues to the head of dept. of Reinsurance • Implements improvements in workflow and procedures. • Implements process for researching large net balances for potential collectible reinsurance. • Maintains a high degree of confidentiality. • Models and practices RiverStone values. Skills: • Understands reinsurance contracts both treaty and facultative • Significant understanding and expertise in claims and complex claims issues, and how these issues impact reinsurers • Excellent verbal, written and negotiation skills • Ability to work independently with little supervision • Ability to travel 1-6 times per year • Excellent management skills including hiring, performance feedback and training in small groups or in one on one setting required • Good organizational skills required • Must be able to prioritize and handle multiple assignments or projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines • Strong computer skills and high level of competency with reinsurance systems Education: Candidates must have a Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, admission to at least one state bar and no ethical violations. Experience: Candidates must have the legal skills and competencies reasonably expected of a lawyer with a minimum of seven (7) years of reinsurance experience as noted above. They must have superior interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. They must be excellent writers. The must be well-organized, effective at managing their time and resources and comfortable meeting deadlines. They must also be comfortable setting and living up to high standards and expectations. They must be able to direct the work of all external and internal resources effectively and in a reasonable and professional manner. They are expected to demonstrate high-quality judgment at all times. They must intimately understand the reinsurance arbitration and litigation process.
