Real Estate Tax Assessment Paralegal Responsibilities: Assists with the administration of property tax appeals, including the timely preparation and filing of appropriate complaints and supporting evidence at three administrative levels as well as in the Circuit Courts. Analyzes properties, reviews and drafts briefs and all supporting evidence for residential, income producing and owner-occupied properties including real estate development projects from demolition to completion for new construction, building rehabs and condo conversions. Understands and interprets assessment records, assessment histories and other relevant documentation common in the practice. Monitors and assists with complaint preparation for tax objection cases filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County as well as court call management and document production. Communicates with clients, both through written and verbal means, including drafting correspondence to summarize appeal results and recommendations, requests and follows up for appropriate data, and fields questions and concerns regarding pending appeals, new properties and other various matters. Communicates with county representatives concerning hearings, scheduling issues, pending settlements, refunds and other related issues. Maintains departmental calendar and docketing. Understands and has experience using an Access database designed for data storage, management and communication with other programs within framework of the practice. Requirements: An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate with 3+ years of experience in the Real Estate Tax Assessment practice area. Must be detailed-oriented, show initiative, possess strong organizational skills, be enthusiastic and work well independently. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Must possess a high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills so as to be able to work well with employees at all levels within the organization and maintain all information in the strictest of confidence. Required to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others. Must have ability to read, write and communicate fluent English; ability to compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; ability to communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone. Must be detail oriented and have excellent organizational skills; ability to balance multiple projects, work independently and have strong time management skills, as well as prioritize work load. Must have ability to reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered. Ability to work overtime as needed. Ability to travel as required. Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills.
