ProfileStaff Attorney - Housing The candidate will litigate cases in housing court, administrative forums, and other state and federal courts on behalf of people facing eviction, and in affirmative cases challenging agencies and actors who threaten Bronx residents' ability to obtain and retain affordable housing. The work will involve developing expertise in housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits. Perform community outreach and provide legal information, advice, and counsel, both in clinical and informal settings. Perform trainings to other advocates, tenant associations, community members, and community groups. May be working in areas of the Bronx facing rapid gentrification and will be expected to work closely with paralegals, tenant organizers, tenant associations and community partners to identify and address housing needs, and to conduct weekday, evening and weekend outreach and off-site intake with partners. Should have a commitment to public service and an understanding of the legal problems and needs of the poor. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a low-income client community. Should have a background in organizing or enthusiasm for partnering with community-based advocates and organizations. Experience in housing, landlord/tenant and or related advocacy, preferred. Fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in the communities we serve is strongly preferred.
