Associate Director Career Services The candidate will report directly to the Assistant Dean of Career Services. Will advise JD and MSJ students and alumni about legal and other careers in different practice settings, including private practice, government, corporations, public interest and other non-profit organizations, and alternative careers settings. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Career Services and the Executive Director of Career Services will assist with developing and implementing the MSJ employment network and resources. Will include providing one-on-one counseling to students and alumni; reviewing and critiquing resumes, cover letters and employer-created applications; conducting mock interviews; and maintaining continuous contact with students and alumni regarding employment opportunities and career objectives. Will assist the Office of Career Services in preparing career-related materials; presenting programs and workshops; developing initiatives and job search strategies; conducting ongoing employer outreach and establishing strong business relationships with employers in various practice settings; and staying apprised of current market news, as well as developments in the legal market and profession. Will work with potential employers to create new career path for MSJ students and graduates and work directly with MSJ students to help find meaningful employment opportunities within a variety of employment contexts. Will compile resources for MSJ students and graduates to aid in their employment searches. Will work closely with the Assistant Dean of Career Services, Faculty, the Administration, student groups, bar associations and other organizations to fulfill the goals of the Office of Career Services, the Law School and the University. Will assume additional responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Dean of Career Services. Provide students and alumni with advice about legal and MSJ related careers and opportunities in various practice settings, including law firms, local, state and federal government agencies, courts, public interest and other non-profit organizations, as well as consulting firms and corporations, in legal, consulting and compliance . Review and critique resumes, cover letters and lists of references. Advise students on other application materials, including writing samples and applications provided by employers. Assist students with developing their interviewing and networking skills, and counsel them regarding appropriate follow-up with employers. Demonstrate general job searching techniques, including online searches and requests for informational interviews. Counsel students about other career objectives and opportunities, including judicial clerkships, fellowships and careers in business and compliance. Be able to build and leverage existing contacts to place JD and MSJ students and alumni. Overall, assist students in creating an individualized comprehensive career exploration and job search strategy, while assuming responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Dean of Career Services. Programming: Develop and present programs based on student interests, including presentations by and roundtable discussions with attorneys who practice or have practiced in various practice settings, including law firms, local, state and/or federal government agencies, courts, public interest and other non-profit organizations, corporations, and alternative career settings. Develop and implement programs relevant to MSJ students. Programs should serve as a forum in which students and alumni can learn about legal compliance and other MSJ related careers, alternative careers, the market, as well as substantive areas of law. Will also assist in spearheading the Office of Career Services’ premier programs, including the Career Networking Forum, Employer Preview, and the Judges’ Reception. Will assist in planning career related programming directly focused on MSJ students. In addition, Will develop and present general career exploration, job search and skills programs, as well as conduct research and create corresponding materials to guide students and alumni. Will assume additional responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Dean of Career Services. Management of Financial Components: Research and develop fellowships, scholarships, grants and other financial support opportunities for students and alumni related to the MSJ degree as well as the JD degree. Oversee the implementation of these financial support opportunities related to the MSJ Program with other law school administrators and others associated with the law school community and legal community, including the Assistant Dean of Career Services, the Executive Director of Career Services, the Director of Financial Resource Management, the Assistant Dean of Alumni & Development, the Board of Visitors, faculty and alumni. Will assume additional responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Dean of Career Services. Business Development: Contribute to office efforts to develop a comprehensive strategic marketing plan to establish and cultivate strong business relationships with employers in various practice settings, including law firms, local, state and federal government agencies, courts, public interest and other non-profit organizations, as well as consulting firms, corporations, and careers in business and compliance. Actively seek their participation in recruiting, internship/externship, and/or substantive career-related programs with emphasis on MSJ students. Attend networking and informational events, including receptions, conferences, seminars, meetings and bar association functions. Serve as a liaison between the law school and the legal and business community to generate interest in the law school, the student body, and alumni. Develop online and hardcopy marketing materials. Conduct research and create a comprehensive directory of contacts in various practice settings, including law firms, local, state and federal government, courts, public interest and non-profit organizations, corporations, and careers in business and compliance. Will assume additional responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Dean of Career Services.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree required and 3-5 years in career services or other related area. Desired: Higher-education experience.
