Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer Responsibilities: Review the firm’s existing strategic business development plan and make recommendations on improvements or modifications. Supervise and coordinate the implementation of the firm’s strategic business development plan to achieve the firm’s business development and marketing goals. Help create and foster a business development culture that embraces a strategic, proactive, and client-centric approach in assisting attorneys with identifying, actively pursuing, and winning new business. Collaborate with attorneys, practice groups, and practice sections to develop and implement group and individual business development plans. Work closely with practice group leaders, firm managers, and marketing colleagues to ensure an organized and client-focused strategy is developed and executed; ensure the efficient flow of information among the groups, and communicate information about business development and marketing efforts throughout the firm as appropriate. Provide business development coaching to selected attorneys and assist them in becoming more effective in business development and client relations and in providing a high level of client care and service; develop and provide business development training for attorneys. Engage in research, analysis, and intelligence gathering, especially regarding emerging market and industry trends, for use in strategic planning, competitive firm positioning, and business development activities. Coordinate the firm’s RFP process and assist attorneys in the preparation of legal services proposals, requests for information, and responses to RFPs. Identify areas for expanded service offerings to clients, and work with practice group leaders, industry sector teams, and senior attorneys to ensure the identification, development, growth, and promotion of high-value services. Identify cross-selling opportunities, communicate these opportunities to the appropriate attorneys or practice groups, and assist in their development and implementation. Develop and coordinate public relations, community, and media relationships, communications, and events; serve as the firm’s visible representative for its business development and marketing approaches and initiatives. Assist with the maintenance and improvement of the content of the firm’s website, marketing materials, and social media presence. Work with firm management and the Marketing Advisory Committee to develop and implement the firm’s branding strategy and tactics. Plan, promote, coordinate, support, and evaluate firm-sponsored meetings and events. Work closely with the Marketing Advisory Committee to oversee maintenance of client data, including championing and maximizing the firm’s implementation and effective use of its customer relationship management software. Oversee business and professional association memberships and work with attorneys to maximize these relationships through speaking engagements, committee participation, and leadership roles. Research, recommend, implement, and maximize appropriate technologies in the firm’s marketing and business development efforts. Work effectively with outside vendors that provide communications, advertising, technology, and other business development and marketing services. Track and analyze business development progress and results and provide regular reports to the Managing Partner and Marketing Advisory Committee. Prepare and manage business development budgets and monitor and control department expenditures accordingly.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, communications, or related field; MBA, JD Degree, or advanced degree preferred. 7-10 years of progressively responsible business development/marketing work experience in the legal field or other professional services organizations. Extensive experience and proven success with formulating, implementing, and sustaining business development efforts and building/expanding client relationships. Strong experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat, OnePlace CRM software, and other technology areas, including websites, intranets, databases, knowledge management tools, social media, and customer relationship management software. Exemplary presentation, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills. Strong leadership, collaborative, and consensus-building skills to work closely and successfully with attorneys, staff, managers, clients, and business executives. Able to quickly develop rapport and gain respect and trust across the firm, coordinating the use of department resources and involving staff and management to complete simultaneous projects in a timely manner with minimal supervision and maximum flexibility. Strong project management and event planning abilities, including demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize, analyze, organize, attend to detail, follow through, delegate, and negotiate. Strong business acumen and a track record of good decision-making. Strong professional, media, and business contacts, particularly in Austin and Houston areas. Able to identify and analyze issues and problems in business development, and recommend and implement solutions. Able to serve as a change agent and advocate for change. Experience building, managing, and tracking budgets and analyzing ROI.
