Hearing Officer, License Division Responsibilities : The candidate will work as a Hearing Officer in the License Division of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Legal Matters. Conducts administrative hearings pertaining to suspension and revocation of NYPD-issued handgun licenses, riffle/shotgun permits, and special patrolman designations. Rules on matters of procedure and introduction of evidence. Writes hearing reports stating issues, findings of fact, conclusions of law, and recommended disposition. Serves as advisor to License Division Director and staff on matters of law, policy, and procedure.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements : The candidate should have admission to the New York State Bar. One(1) year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086). Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment. Must have one(1) year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. AL III- Must have two(2) years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. Exceptional analytical ability; ability to prepare well-reasoned decisions with strict time frames. Outstanding writing skills. Poise, discretion, patience, tact, and sound judgment. Ability to handle complex hearings and issue timely decision, while producing a highly professional work product. Proficiency in Word, Microsoft Outlook, and computerized legal research. New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
