Assistant General Counsel III A Responsibilities Managing the County trial unit. Analyzing cases to determine whether they should be settled or tried. Guiding and instructing trial attorneys in the County litigation unit about appropriate tactical and legal issues to enable to defend effectively the Authority’s interests. Assigning, where appropriate, cases to outside counsel and monitoring their activity. Conferring with attorneys in the pre-trial unit to devise joint strategies to protect the Authority’s interests. Keeping senior management informed of high-exposure cases and consulting with them about trial and litigation strategies to reduce the Authority’s ultimate exposure.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: A Law Degree and admission to the Bar of the State of New York; extensive knowledge of State and Federal substantive and procedural law relating to tort liability; 7+ years of progressively more independent litigation experience after admission to the Bar. Desired: A familiarity with procedures utilized in managing and defending personal injury suits that present substantial financial exposure. Familiarity with tort trial counsel, both defense and plaintiff, and willingness to invest whatever time and effort required to insure that all other responsibilities are effectively met. Must be able to analyze, evaluate, and conference personal injury cases, communicate effectively orally and in writing, effectively manage professional and nonprofessional staff, and manage various providers of service, including investigators and physicians; and have significant experience in defending cases with exposure of at least $100K.
