Staff Attorney The candidate will work with clients from special populations - specifically Veterans and Migrant Farmworkers throughout Maryland and Delaware. Will provide legal assistance to low-income veterans and migrant farmworkers from initial intake through representation before all relevant agencies and courts. Work with legal and non-legal staff on cases and/or projects, and maintain case files in accordance with organization standards. Provide support and advice on substantive civil legal issues facing special populations. Assist with the recruitment, orientation, and training of volunteers. Conduct outreach in the veterans community statewide and, with paralegal assistance, to the migrant farmworker communities throughout Maryland and Delaware. Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals, as appropriate; conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients; conduct factual investigations and analysis and advise clients of results of investigations; conduct legal research; and counsel clients about their options pursuant to standards established by organization. Maintain a caseload for persons within the special populations served. Cases may involve veterans' benefits, wage protections for agricultural workers, substandard housing, overtime claims, unemployment insurance, and other legal issues affecting the populations served. Provide excellent representation to clients in various forums and preparing and/or responding to pleadings and motions, discovery requests, appellate briefs, and memoranda. Perform other duties, as assigned within the scope of the essential functions of the position.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have graduated from an ABA-approved law school and eligible for admission in the State of Maryland. Must be experienced in working with pro bono lawyers and volunteers. Demonstrated commitment to working in a public interest law firm assisting low-income persons is required. Should be admitted to practice in the State of Maryland or admitted in another jurisdiction. Must be certified to practice in Veterans Administration proceedings or able to become certified immediately after hire. Should be able to spend time traveling throughout Maryland and Delaware, especially on the Eastern Shore. Out-of-State attorneys must be able and available to take next scheduled Bar exam following date of employment. Spanish-speaking fluency is preferred.
