Assistant Attorney General Duties: The candidate will work in its Civil Litigation Division. Will involves in civil litigation work on behalf of the State of Kansas, its agencies and its employees. Cases are filed in state and federal courts as well as before administrative agencies. Will principally be assigned Federal inmate litigation, some state court work for the Kansas Prisoner Review Board, and representation of state agencies in administrative law cases. Trial and trial preparation skills as well as strong research and writing skills are required. Some appellate work may be involved. Initiates disciplinary administrative matters and performs legal functions and defends an assigned caseload of civil litigation matters, including tort defense of the State. Duties include, drafting/arguing pre-trial motions; pleading preparation; interviewing clients and witnesses; legal research and writing; conducting depositions and other forms of discovery; conducting negotiations; participating in court or jury trials; researching, interpreting and applying statutes, court decisions or other legal authority on points of law; and overall case management. Also entails working with the agency’s record retention policies and procedures. Trial experience, including completed jury trials is preferred. Graduate of an accredited law school. Certificate of admission to and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas is required. Admission to the United States District Court for the District of Kansas and admission to or eligibility for admission to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
