Staff Attorney Candidate will provide direct legal services and rights information to persons who are deaf and hard of hearing as well as advocating for the rights of the persons who are deaf and hard of hearing through systems reform. Legal services include: interviewing clients, reviewing records, conducting legal research and legal writing, negotiating outcomes and representing clients in administrative hearings and state and federal judicial proceedings. Will also provide education and training sessions about the legal rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing to persons with disabilities, advocates and professionals in the community. Provides direct legal representation to persons who are deaf and hard of hearing in cases within priority areas. Representation includes factual investigation of claims, legal research, negotiation, administrative proceedings, and litigation. Responds to requests for assistance, interviews potential clients and provides legal advice and information to persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. In conjunction with program areas, serves as an information source to the state legislature, state agencies, and other entities whose personnel, rules and/or regulations impact upon persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. Pursues systemic issues of concern to persons who are deaf and hard of hearing within priority areas by filing litigation, conducting investigations, working on legislative or regulatory reform and by serving as Amicus Curiae in cases involving significant policy matters. Attends required meetings, including staff, team meetings, in-service, and other pertinent meetings as required. Responsible for participation in case review with the Deputy Executive Director and Litigation Director and maintaining case files in accordance with the Center’s case handling procedures. Contributes to the development of written material including training materials, required reports, and articles for newsletters or other publications. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Center’s goals and objectives. Responsible for keeping the Deputy Executive Director and Litigation Director informed of systemic and/or significant legal issues involving persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. Complete administrative requirements and necessary documentation required by the Center. Prepares monthly grant reports and attends meetings with the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Maintain confidentiality of clients and persons requesting services of the Center (pursuant to the code of professional responsibility). Travel as needed to provide services. Develops and maintains caseload within the levels established by the grant and meets expectations for litigation. Appropriately prioritizes tasks as needed and to multi-task numerous responsibilities in a timely manner. Effectively and regularly communicate with employees, clients, the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the public. Perform other duties as requested or required. Will report to firm's Deputy Executive Director and Litigation Director.

Qualification and Experience

Candidate should have a Law Degree and Arizona Law License with 1+ years of previous related experience, preferably working with persons with disabilities. Maintain licensure to practice law in Arizona is needed. Demonstrated knowledge of complex state and federal rights protection statutes, laws, and regulations is required. Knowledge of American Sign Language is preferred.
