Legal Director Duties: Under the supervision of the Executive Director, be expected to perform the following duties which include: Supervise and participate in pending litigation in state and federal court, including all aspects of discovery, motion practice, evidentiary hearings, and drafting briefs in trial and appellate courts; Research, investigate, develop, and present selected potential cases to the Litigation Committee for evaluation; Review requests for legal assistance and supervise legal intake program to ensure that requests for assistance are properly evaluated and processed and to identify appropriate cases for legal challenge; and Recruit and coordinate volunteer private attorneys statewide; Manages and administers the Legal Department. Manages and oversees intake process, supervises intake database; reviews complaint intake for potential action; strategizes and executes intake-related actions and reports. Drafts the Legal Department’s annual budget, and proposals for the strategic plan. Planning includes identifying potential high-impact civil liberties litigation, so that the union is proactive in its legal work. Manages the union’s time and cost entry system. Recruits, selects, and supervises Legal. Department interns, externs, volunteers, and cooperating volunteer attorneys, in ways that: are productive for the Union, provide an excellent experience for them, and reflect well on Union. Manages Legal Department staff members, including staff attorneys and paralegals to maximize their productivity and professional development. Performs annual evaluations of Legal Department staff. Speak publicly to groups and organizations on civil liberties issues; Media availability for legal cases and issues; Draft press releases, op-ed pieces and newsletter/website articles related to legal cases and issues. Strategize and collaborate with the Executive Director and Legislative Director.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: J.D. degree with 3-5 years of litigation experience (although more recent law school graduates with exceptional abilities and experience will be considered); Judicial clerkships strongly preferred but not required; and members of the Nevada Bar or should be prepared to obtain admission as soon as possible. Spanish/English bilingual speaking and writing skills desired. Excellent writing, research, analytical and public speaking skills; Ability to develop and implement litigation strategies; Strong self-motivation and ability to manage multiple deadlines; Substantive knowledge of constitutional law and civil liberties; Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and the mission of the ACLU; Facility for administrative work including coordination with volunteer attorneys and supervision of junior staff attorney, law students, interns, and office volunteers; Experience working with legislative processes a plus; Ability to think creatively and to use non-litigation strategies to promote objectives, including building coalitions with ally organizations, lobbying and developing public-education programs.
