Assistant Corporation Counsel Responsibilities: Gives direction and advice to less experienced attorneys. Handles more complex litigation and research assignments. Prepares contracts, resolutions, ordinances, complaints, motions, briefs and other legal documents. Conducts and participates in depositions and hearings. Represents local governmental agencies in court and before the City-County Council and various Boards and Commissions. Renders advice to governmental agencies, officials and employees. Offers advisory legal opinions. Monitors, advises and drafts work on local ordinances and state legislation. Answers questions concerning ordinances from City/County officials. Performs related duties as requested.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Doctor of Jurisprudence from an accredited college of university. Valid legal license to practice law in Indiana. Shall have practiced law for 4+ years. Knowledge of legislative process helpful. Knowledge of Municipal Code of Indianapolis helpful. Knowledge of and experience in administrative law helpful. These are the minimum requirements for this position. Court actions are controlled by standard judicial procedures and upheld/overseen by the trial judge. Independent judgment is exercised in researching and offering legal opinions and in handling litigation. Actions are subject to review on a continuing spot check basis by the Corporation Counsel and Deputy Corporation Counsel. Interactions require extreme tact, diplomacy and persuasiveness in dealings with private and public attorneys, judges, court personnel, elected and appointed officials and the general public. The incumbent must also work closely with office support staff to assure timely preparation of legal documents. Must exhibit tact in working with other professionals and support staff within respective section.
