Staff Intake Attorney The candidate will be responsible for factual investigation, legal research, and short-term representation. Position includes significant client contact and work on disability law related projects and committees. Provide information and referral to individuals who contact organization and brief service to eligible clients. Brief service includes legal advice, short term representation, which may involve attendance at meetings, negotiations, third party contact or other brief interventions which resolve matters promptly and within a short period of time. These include emergency and non-emergency matters. Brief service also includes investigation and legal research to determine whether or not a case should be opened for full representation. As needed, provide back up to staff attorneys which may at times require providing full representation singularly or on a co-counsel basis. Participate as a member of the intake team, project teams or work groups to help ensure that brief service and full representation cases are selected in accordance with priorities and strategies. Recommend case opening recommendations in a timely and prompt manner to the legal director when full representation is believed to be warranted. Participate on task forces, coalitions, and otherwise collaborate with other external individuals and groups on activities benefiting individuals with disabilities. Provide education and training to individuals with disabilities or families or guardians regarding rights and how to self advocate. Provide education and training to attorneys, other individuals and organizations in and outside of organization's on legal issues and developments regarding rights of individuals with disabilities and related matters. Maintain all client files, records, timesheets and other data as required by the organization. Stay current with changes in state and federal law regarding disabilities and other procedural and substantive laws necessary to practice law. Maintain continuing legal education requirements required by the NH Bar, and attend training to maintain and improve or refine advocacy skills and substantive knowledge. Stay current with government and private advances in best practices and trends in relevant disability fields and disability rights movement which promote independence, improve quality of life and integration of individuals with disabilities. Document activity in accordance with agency policies and perform related responsibilities as assigned. Must possess a J.D. degree an 0-5 years of experience.
