Profile

Pre-Law Advisor Duties: Provides educational services and support to students and alumni interested in attending law school/pursuing legal careers. Explore, establish, and achieve law school admission, responsibilities of the pre-law advisor include: Informing advisees about skills/knowledge for success in law school, and suggesting curricular/co-curricular opportunities to develop these areas. Providing information on law schools including rankings/other statistics and evaluating advisees’ chances of obtaining admission. Assisting advisees with the law school application process, inclusive of personal statements, letters of recommendations, taking the LSAT, etc. Providing support and offering relevant resources for underrepresented/marginalized law school applicants. Discussing financial responsibilities including paying for law school, debt incurred, and income expectations. Pre-law advising is in the College of Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Office, and the pre-law advisor reports to the Associate Director. The pre-law advisor works closely with faculty and staff in a busy, collaborative environment. Additionally, the pre-law advisor will: Participate in New Student Orientation and recruitment events. Offer programs, workshops, and outreach to assist students as they make their decision whether to pursue law school. Connect with pre-law student groups and faculty who assist them. Coordinate the annual campus Law Day. Collect law school admission data and prepare an annual pre-law report. Maintain network of faculty, attorneys and law students as advising resources. Connect with pre-law advisors and law school admissions representatives. Write dean’s letters and process bar statements. Review/award pre-law scholarships. Perform other related duties.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: Master’s degree. 3 - 5 years of experience in higher education or legal setting. Understanding of, appreciation for, and proven experience working with diverse constituencies. Effective and professional communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to participate in evening/ weekend programming (occasional travel will be necessary). Exceptional public speaking and presentation skills. Proven ability to complete responsibilities in a professional and timely manner. Preferred: JD Degree strongly preferred. Previous experience practicing law. Knowledge and understanding of college student population, in particular pre-law students. Demonstrated understanding of law school admissions. Experience with PowerPoint, website maintenance, database management, and Excel.
