Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) Project Manager Duties: Oversees the work of the Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) department, works closely with the LAF Committee to make recommendations for board action, advises board and senior staff on legal issues pertaining to mission-related issues, works closely with LAF-supported plaintiffs and their attorneys to advance the LAF goals and serves as a content expert and spokesperson on LAF issues such as gender-based discrimination, workplace equity, sexual harassment and sexual violence with members, the public and the media. Acts in a legal advisory capacity for ensuring the organization operates within the law at all times, offering counsel on general legal issues, writing and reviewing contracts, working strategically with organization leadership to mitigate legal risk. Serve as the staff liaison to the LAF Committee, working closely with the c hair, guiding quarterly committee meeting agenda, content and reporting particularly with respect to case status and current funding needs/allocation grant recommendations to the board, and reporting on LAF Outreach Project. Serve as a content expert and spokesperson for AAUW on legal issues such as sexual harassment, sexual assault, Title IX, Title VII, and workplace discrimination. Give media interviews. Represent at 5-10 external (non-AAUW-led) national conferences and events annually. Speak to members across the country at 20 branch meetings, state conventions, and national conventions. Contribute to the development of national research on LAF-related topics. Manage and develop LAF programs, including strategic workplace case support, the LAF Legal Referral Network, public education and outreach programs, and the online LAF Resource Library. Create and design Programs in a Box so members can address issues like equity in sports and campus sexual assault in their communities. Provide first-line assistance to plaintiffs and other individuals seeking information and assistance from LAF regarding sex discrimination; serve as principal staff liaison to plaintiffs receiving LAF support. Manage the Case Support Travel Grant, facilitating plaintiffs and lawyers to speak at state conventions. Work closely with Development and Membership Departments to leverage LAF fundraising and member acquisition/retention efforts. Develop new resources and tools that meet needs of branches, campuses, and workplaces in fighting gender discrimination. Research and write various publications and documents, including the LAF brochure, monthly member e-newsletter LAF Express and the print newsletter LAF Update, published 3 times a year, expanding that the latter to examinations of comparable cases and related legal precedents. Contribute to publications such as Mission and Action and Outlook. Organize and host conference calls for an member audience twice a year about LAF programs. Develop and provide informational materials, and educate state and branch leaders and members of the public on LAF programs and issues. Manage the $400K LAF budget. Make board presentations as needed. Supervise interns. Provide expert and strategic legal advice to management. Draft agreements and contracts that minimize risks and maximize legal rights. Inform thinking on internal governance policies and manage the impact of external factors. Evaluate and weigh multiple inputs and impacts of any decision or course of action. Create associations of trust and respect with key stakeholders. Deal with external parties (vendors, partners, external counsel, clients).

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: U.S. Law degree and 5 years of related work experience. Experience with gender equity and/or other civil rights issues; school/campus-based legal issues, e.g. Title IX, Title VII, sexual harassment and sexual violence, tenure and promotion; and other workplace discrimination issues. Excellent written and oral communications skills. Ability to work independently and flexibly, as part of a team, and effectively with colleagues, external partners, and volunteers, including volunteer leaders. Ability to analyze, research, facilitate, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to supervise and delegate appropriate responsibilities to support staff.
