Profile

Deputy Director, Veterans Benefits Program The candidate under the direct supervision of the Director, will be the supervisor of company’s national service officers and national appellate attorneys stationed at our Washington, DC offices. Will be responsible for advocating on behalf of veterans across the nation to ensure that VA’s disability benefits programs are truly working on behalf of veterans and their families. Specifically, the primary job responsibilities are listed below: Directly supervise and provide ongoing training and advice to company’s national service officers and national appellate attorneys located at company’s offices at the Appeals Management Center and the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. Address systematic problems with VA that come to our attention from service officers across the nation and appeals attorneys stationed at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. Attend and bring up issues at regular meetings with staff and work with other VSOs and company staff to advocate on behalf of the rights of veterans. Provide substantive advice on benefits claims, ensure that homeless and low-income veterans cases receive priority, and provide direct representation to veterans on a limited basis at Regional Offices and the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. Assist with formally commenting on changes in the Federal Register concerning veterans law issues and advise on company class action suits and litigation with the Director and other company staff. Provide legal advice and assistance to company’s local veterans benefits programs across the nation and perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director to support the overall operations of company’s Veterans Benefits Program.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school and bar membership. Must have management experience and experience working with VA benefits and healthcare related laws. Must possess prior veterans benefits law experience (Title 38) and related laws, regulations and procedures, as well as a familiarity with federal court veterans benefits jurisprudence and administrative law. Must demonstrate a high ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must have superb legal research and writing skills, as well as the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks based upon urgency. The applicant should have a commitment to public service.
