Staff Attorney - National Security Project The candidate’s primary focus will initially be on national security issues but the Staff Attorney may be called upon to work on other agency issues as needs arise. Work on significant constitutional and statutory litigation and policy advocacy on a range of national security matters, and may be called upon to work on other agency issues as needs arise. Report to the Director of the National Security Project and possess the ability to contribute to all aspects of the Project’s litigation and non-litigation work. Litigate and manage national security and civil liberties cases in the trial and appellate courts through legal and factual research, writing pleadings and briefs, and working with clients and witnesses. Develop new cases and non-litigation advocacy projects. Serve as a resource for agency legislative and policy staff at the federal and state level, and advancing agency policy goals through public education and organizing and participating in coalitions. Develop and write advocacy materials for expert and lay audiences. Engage in public speaking, including to the media and at conferences for expert and lay audiences. Work in collaboration with other members of the National Security Project, and other legal and non-legal staff, particularly legislative, communications and advocacy staff. Supervise legal fellows, law students, paralegals, legal administrative assistants, and interns. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance. Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts. A J.D. degree is required, and membership in the New York State Bar is preferred. 2-3 years of litigation experience is required. Experience litigating constitutional and statutory matters involving national security and civil liberties issues in federal court is preferred; a commitment to these issues required. Demonstrated: commitment to public interest generally and civil liberties in particular; excellent legal research, writing, verbal communication, and community outreach skills required. Proven project management and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently, pay attention to detail, and meet deadlines while under pressure required. Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
