Staff Attorney, Tenants' Rights Unit Duties: Will join a dedicated team of advocates pursuing creative and effective legal strategies to allow low-income New Yorkers to stay in their homes and communities, especially in neighborhoods experiencing rapid development and gentrification. The work will focus on cases for tenants in Brooklyn and will include regular staffing of legal intake in Kings County Housing Court and at Brooklyn-based community partners. Will carry a full caseload of cases in Kings County Housing Court and litigation before administrative agencies as necessary. Will handle Housing Court matters from intake to settlement or trial and work closely with clients and outside agencies to assist clients to resolve cases. Matters will include nonpayment, holdover, HP, Section 8 and organization's proceedings, as well as other issues faced by low-income tenants at risk of eviction.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: A New York admitted attorney with 1 year of experience litigating in NYC Housing Court and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law and service to vulnerable populations. Applicants must have excellent communication, legal research and writing skills. Applicants should be able speak, read, and write Russian well. Should be well-versed in Housing Court motion practice and stipulation drafting, skilled at oral argument and negotiation, and very knowledgeable about rent stabilization laws.
