Elder Fraud Attorney The candidate will litigate home ownership and consumer law issues in state and federal courts on behalf of elderly clients. Will expand the scope and reach of the practice, including working to prevent and remedy schemes aimed at defrauding seniors out of their life savings. Working under the guidance of a senior attorney, and in collaboration with pro bono attorneys and volunteers, conduct all phases of pretrial discovery, law and motion practice, trial preparation, trial, and appeal. Will also coordinate and conduct outreach presentations concerning elder fraud issues and public advocacy on consumer protection issues, including Community Reinvestment obligations during community bank mergers and relevant legislative policymaking. Represent individuals/ groups in state and federal courts in cases involving real estate and consumer fraud. Develop, conduct and/or co-counsel strategic impact litigation to remedy and prevent scams against the elderly. Conduct community education and outreach presentations to diverse populations of seniors. Work closely with organization's AVP of Pro Bono to place matters with pro bono attorneys, and train and mentor pro bono attorneys and law students handling elder fraud cases and other project work.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should be an active member of the California State Bar in good standing, or licensed in another state and eligible to practice under Rule 9.45 of the California Rules of Court (Registered Legal Services Attorneys). Must have 3-5 years of litigation (trial experience highly preferred) experience. Should be able to handle a litigation heavy caseload. Experience in consumer rights, debtors' rights, home equity/title fraud or elder financial abuse preferred. Strong research, writing and motion practice experience needed. Bilingual skills in English/Spanish highly preferred. Effective advocate for public policy issues required.
