Staff Attorney Duties: Provide legal representation to eligible clients in general civil cases; practice areas include domestic violence, housing, consumer, elder law, health and benefit law. As part of a holistic approach, representation may include varying areas of law as needed. Participate in administrative advocacy, litigation in state and federal courts, and community education for clients in accordance with program guidelines and priorities and the Code of Professional Responsibility. Provide legal representation to eligible clients in civil cases. Meet the requirements of any special funding source regarding substantive area of practice, clients served and types of service offered. (If appropriate, a summary of special requirements or assignments are attached.) Review and supervise the work of support staff members done on behalf of attorney’s clients and clients assigned to support staff. In coordination with managing attorney, communicate and establish contacts with courts, local and state bar associations, community agencies and local client groups. Act as a resource for other staff in substantive areas of law in which attorney develops a specialty. Participate in the firm’s community education program, by being available to speak with community groups and agency staff, suggesting ideas for and helping to prepare community education materials, and generally looking for ways to alert clients to their legal rights and responsibilities in the field of poverty law. Work with members of the private bar and with pro bono staff to promote private bar involvement. Use basic capability of word processing, e-mail, and Legal Files database. Establish and maintain professional working relationship with office and firm staff. Participate on internal committees, practice groups and other efforts to promote and improve operation. Become familiar with and complies with program policies and regulations of the Legal Services Corporation and other funders. Become familiar with and complies with relevant portions of the Legal Services Corporation’s Performance Criteria and with the American Bar Association’s Standards for the Provision of Civil Legal Aid. Provide assistance when needed in other service areas in Legal Aid Society’s 48 county service area. Perform such other duties as may be reasonably requested.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Law school graduate. Admitted to practice in Tennessee or willing to take first available Bar examination. Interest in public interest law and the problems of disadvantaged communities. Experience required for work under a specific funding source or in a specialized unit. Ability to relate to the needs of people of diverse backgrounds and adhere to confidentiality standards. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Excellent interpersonal skills. Experience in public speaking and training others on the law. Experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc) and Legal Files database. Ability to learn new computer skills. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish a plus.
