Staff Attorney - Prosecutorial Reform The candidate will work in the Center and work with the Union’s Campaign and the various projects/programs in the Center to develop and execute a litigation plan aimed at prosecutorial reform in America. Will work directly with the Center prosecutorial reform team to help lead the Union’s litigation strategy to reform prosecutorial practices by focusing on filing lawsuits against prosecutors to pierce the veil of impunity that has long enabled egregiously regressive and unconstitutional practices. Will work closely with both the Center and with the various Projects/Programs in the Center. Will work closely with the Campaign and the Center to develop and execute a plan to file lawsuits against prosecutorial practices that drive mass incarceration. In collaboration with the working group. Developing a litigation strategy in state and federal courts to impact the behavior of prosecutors around the country. This work will include researching and drafting pleadings and briefs, engaging in discovery and motion practice, and conducting evidentiary hearings, oral arguments and trials. Analyzing prosecutor policies and office practices for potential litigation using all available legal theories. Providing litigation assistance and advice to local union affiliates, cooperating attorneys, and others who seek assistance from the Campaign or the Center. Develop new cases and non-litigation advocacy projects. Serve as a resource for union legislative and policy work and advancing union policy goals through public education, organizing and participating in coalitions. Collaborate with staff across the organization, including in other projects within the union’s Legal Department, Communications, Affiliate Support and Advocacy, the Washington Legislative Office and state affiliates. Engaging in public speaking and articulating union views to a variety of audiences. Supervising legal fellows, interns, legal administrative assistants and paralegals. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance. Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree and 7+ years of litigation experience, preferably in federal court, including experience as lead counsel. More experience are strongly encouraged to apply. Appropriate bar membership permitting practice in New York. A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties, racial justice, and public interest law. A demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a team. Ability to foster and contribute to a collaborative team environment is essential. Excellent legal research skills. Demonstrated ability to perform complex legal analytical work. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing. Self-motivated, diligent, and able to meet strict deadlines while under pressure. Familiarity with the criminal justice system (i.e., as a criminal defense lawyer, formerly incarcerated person, or prosecutor) is desired. Term: 2 years
