Senior Media Relations Manager Duties: Provide a high level of leadership and involvement in the development, management and execution of a broad range of public and media relations activities. Play a key role in guiding, contributing to and planning the firm’s thought leadership strategy, including: working closely with lawyers and CR staff to identify media opportunities for lawyers related to external speaking engagements, expert commentary opportunities, byline articles and other mediums to convey their expertise; study legal media coverage as well as key client industries in order to identify trends and opportunities for thought leadership; and work with the broader Communications team to develop and distribute content through meaningful and strategic channels, including social media. Manage and provide active involvement with the firm’s public relations agency and an active earned media strategy. Ensure the relationship is maximized with regular tracking and reporting of progress. Work together with the Marketing staff, practice and industry group leaders and other relevant leadership positions to ensure PR programs are tied in effectively to group business plans. Cultivate and manage relationships with journalists who cover issues of importance to the firm and its clients. Serve as the firm’s key spokesperson with the press. Coordinate interviews and meetings with reporters and lawyers. Establish and maintain key working relationships with the press. Develop process around and firm surveys and award nominations and provide oversight of the appropriate PR team involvement. Monitor, analyze and report on the success of the firm's public and media relations efforts. Support crisis communications.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Journalism, and 7-10 years of experience managing public relations and media relations activity, or equivalent. Prior experience of meaningful length in law firms or the legal industry, financial services or the technology sector is a significant plus. Prior experience with leading or executing social media activity/strategy is highly desired. Requires strong leadership experience of the PR function, including experience overseeing and leading a relationship with an outside PR agency. Excellent writing and editorial skills and ability to handle sensitive matters with excellent judgment are required. Must have strong interpersonal skills and comfort working with lawyers and law firm leaders, particularly in media training/coaching. Requires the ability to foster and deepen relationships with the business and legal press—having current relationships is a plus. Must be able to shift quickly to accommodate rapidly changing events.
